URJ Books And Music :: About Tina Wasserman

About Tina Wasserman
Is your adult education committee looking for a program that is exciting, interactive and informative? Do your members span all age groups and ethnicities? Does Outreach in your community mean bringing congregants new to Judaism as well as founding members of the synagogue together to learn about Jewish culture?

If this describes your house of worship, then meet Tina Wasserman, the author of the new, bestselling cookbook, Entrée to Judaism: A Culinary Exploration of the Jewish Diaspora (URJ Press, 2010).

Tina’s warm personality, extensive knowledge of Jewish food history, and all aspects of culinary technique will delight your audiences as she tells the stories behind the recipes and the recipes behind the stories of the Jewish people throughout the world.

Tina’s presentations can fit many formats:

  • Lecture and Discussion: A PowerPoint-aided talk defining Jewish food and its historical significance followed by a Q&A session on all things culinary can be given to a large audience.
  • Lunch and Learn: Components of the meal provide the subject matter for Tina’s talk and Q&A is concurrent with the luncheon.
  • Cooking Demonstration and Tasting highlighting recipes of a specific holiday or region of the world. Tasting of samples and Q&A will follow.
  • Hands-On Cooking Workshop: Up to 50 people working in small groups will prepare interesting and often little-known Jewish dishes. This format is good for family programming or students with diverse backgrounds.
  • Private Cooking Class for Fundraising: For 12-15 people; this class will provide students with direct supervision while they prepare a meal representing a regional or multi-region cuisine from the Jewish Diaspora.

In addition to the preceding programs, your congregation has the opportunity to purchase Entrée to Judaism from URJ Press at a significant savings and sell it to benefit your educational programming.

The Washington Post listed Entrée to Judaism as #7 in the top 30 cookbooks of 2009. The book contains more than 275 recipes in over 480 pages of history and food folklore, plus scores of delicious full-color photographs. Each recipe includes Tina’s Tidbits, cooking instructions and culinary hints for novice cooks and experts alike.

Here’s what people are saying about Entrée to Judaism and Tina Wasserman:

“It was so nice to meet you at the WRJ Assembly. Everyone who heard you speak, both at the workshop that I facilitated and the one at the URJ meeting, raved about your presentations. My cookbooks arrived today and I can't wait to share them with my daughters-in-law. My sisterhood is considering giving the books to new Jews by choice when they complete their studies to welcome them into the congregation. We will also be carrying some in our gift shop.”

It is spectacular…and huge! I had no idea it was going to be so extensive—you’re the Julia Child’s of Jewish cooking! I can’t wait to try some of the recipes.”

What a beautiful book. I love it, but most of all I love hearing you talk about it. That makes this book even more beautiful to me.”

“Tina, you were marvelous on NPR!!! Great info, I baked apples yesterday, you made me hungry for them. I will forever roll out pastry dough in powdered sugar… I was thoroughly entertained.”

We finally got our library copy of the cookbook. I took it home with me last night, and I wanted to tell you how wonderful it is! Cookbooks are one of my favorite things to read, and yours is a gem! You did a fabulous job!!”

“People are still talking about your class here a few weeks ago – it was great.”

My Jewish World: An Early Childhood Music Curriculum (Book/CD set)

Music can be a wonderfully effective teaching tool for preschool aged children. My Jewish World guides teachers through the process of introducing and utilizing song in the classroom to teach Jewish values.

In her comprehensive and easy to follow book, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh includes twenty-six songs, religious and secular, that will help to facilitate an environment of fun and learning. Each song addresses important Jewish concepts and many use Hebrew words and prayers. Judy provides comments, activities, and creative ideas, specific for each song, which can be used in the classroom to learn about being Jewish every day. The importance of saying the Sh'ma each morning, learning the Hebrew words for colors, understanding body parts, and the value of cooperation are only some of the Jewish concepts touched on in the book.

In addition, Judy Ginsburgh includes a list of suggested books for many of the topics. These books help to reinforce and expand the lessons laid out in the curriculum.

With a helpful glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and the companion music CD, My Jewish World is a wonderful guide to making music significant in the Jewish classroom.
